Slogan

- A forward looking and pragmatic department

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at the National University of Tainan, Taiwan, ROC. This introduction is designed to help prospective students and faculty to obtain more information about our department, and to serve as an entry point for colleagues around the world.

Founding History

The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering started the bachelor program in August, 2004. Our master program started in August, 2007 in the Graduate Institute of Computational Intelligences & Applications. Since August 1, 2008, as approved by the Ministry of Education, the Graduate Institute of Computational Intelligences & Applications was renamed as the Master Program of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. From 2004, when the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering had only two faculty members, we have now grown to a faculty of over 17 members (4 affiliated, 4 adjunctive), and now we admit about 40 new undergraduate and 13 new graduate students every year.

Department Goals

There is a pressing demand in the contemporary industry for computer science and information engineering professionals. The integration development of informatics and computer science has become the latest trend of informatics development. Our academic programs are designed to prepare students for successful careers in a rapidly evolving discipline, and we place a strong emphasis on the areas of computational intelligences, multimedia and network communication technologies, biomedical informatics and their applications. The goals of the department are twofold: (1) To prepare our students for professional skills in immediate employment of information technologies; (2) To prepare part of our students for basic academic potential on pursuing advanced studies in information technologies.

Degree Programs

The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering offers two degrees: the Bachelor Degree Program of Computer Science and Information Engineering, and the Master Degree Program in Computer Science and Information Engineering. The Bachelor Degree Program is a 4-year program offered in the general fields of computer science. The curriculum covers both the theoretical and practical aspects. The courses include basic mathematics and physics, programming, software systems, hardware systems and their applications. The undergraduate program students have to take 32 units of General Courses, 70 units of Core Courses, 18 units of Core Elective Courses, and 12 units of Elective Courses during 4 years. Every student is also required to fulfill a project during the 3rd Year Spring and the 4th Year Fall semesters. The Master Degree Program is a 2-year program offered in the following fields of study: Computational Intelligences, Multimedia and Network Communication Technologies, Biomedical Informatics and their Applications. The graduate program students have to take 4 units of Compulsory Core Courses and 24 units of Elective Courses (including at least 9 units of Core Domain Electives), and fulfill a master thesis within 2-4 years.

Laboratories & Facilities

The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering manages two teaching laboratories and nine research laboratories that directly support the work of students and faculty: the Digital Systems Design Laboratory, Network Communication Laboratory, Database and Information Knowledge System Laboratory, Ontology Applications & Software Engineering Laboratory, Intelligent Technology Laboratory, Intelligent Systems and Applications Laboratory, Multimedia and Medical Imaging Laboratory, Multimedia Networking Laboratory, Mobile Computing and Network Laboratory, Digital Life Technology Laboratory, and the Bioinformatics Laboratory. The facilities include multimedia computer, embedded system design equipment, network communication equipment, wireless AP, PDA, smart cellular phones, scanner, color printer, and laser printer. The university also maintains a large number of computer clusters across campus, which is available to all students for word processing and other general applications.

Admissions

There are two ways to join the department of Computer Science and Information Engineering for domestic students: application and entrance examination. The admission decisions of application are based on the overall academic records, letters of recommendation, and other information provided in the application, while no strict rules exist for the decision to admit a student. Applicants should have a senior high school degree, or an equivalent degree of senior high school, admitted by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. The prospective students could also join our department via the entrance examination held in July 1-3 every year. For international students, we welcome the foreign students to apply for admission to our department. The detailed information and application form can be found from the website of .our university. Moreover, our university provides scholarships for the prospective students to apply. The detailed information can be found from the Guidelines for International Student Scholarships of our university.

Career Development

Students graduated from our department possessed excellent training both in theoretical and practical aspects of computer science and information engineering. They are thus highly favored and recruited by industrial companies. They can serve as an engineer on software, hardware, multimedia, network communication, digital content, and other related applications, etc. Some students who are interested in pursuing advanced technologies in computer science and information engineering are encouraged to continue their studies in the master and/or doctorial programs.
